Welcome to Our Journey Through Food!
As nervous as I am to sharing my thoughts and ideas on the internet, I am also very excited to welcome you to Our Journey Through Food!
I started an Instagram page (@ourjourneythroughfood) a bit over a year ago when I was first diagnosed with celiac disease. I figured it would be a good outlet to help me cope with the sudden life change and it proved to be quite effective. I have been contemplating starting a blog to complement it for a while now and I figured I might as well just give it a try, so here goes nothing... (Warning: I am a huge nerd and get very corny so enjoy!)
Food is at the center of everything. It shapes our cultures, our views, our actions, our lives. This blog and instagram page is meant to be a space to share positive interactions with food, healthy or otherwise, and to help build more positive relationships with the foods we eat - because let's face it, we all want to feel good about what we eat!
So before we start I should share a bit about myself. I am a recent graduate from St. Francis Xavier University (little university in Antigonish, NS - 2016 & 2017) with degrees in Human Nutrition and Human Kinetics. I am a newly licensed Registered Dietitian trying to find my way in life post-university. I have always loved cooking, eating and being physically active. Like most I always thought I would be a doctor, but that quickly changed when getting to university and discovering the realm of nutrition. I am fascinated with how food influences our every action, on a physiological, psychological, and sociological level. Nutrition has many facets which I continue to explore, focusing on sport nutrition.
With my recent diagnosis of celiac disease my perception and relationship with food completely changed. I went from having a positive relationship with food to hating it, dreading eating and just not wanting to deal with food at all. I realized that this really wasn't the end of the world and that this diagnosis was actually going to make me a better RD in the end. So over the past year I have been working on rebuilding my relationship with food and although there have been ups and downs it is starting to come along.

Now that you know a bit about me I hope you all enjoy the posts to come. They will be about my thoughts on food and nutrition, focusing on the science and social aspects. I hope that this will help others to also build more positive relationships with food and provide some entertainment! Food is at the center and connects us all, so I look forward to sharing this journey together!
So to end this post and kick off Our Journey Through Food here is a thought on what food means to me. To me food means not only physical health but also mental health and social well being. Food is a way to connect with others and understand them. For me food is a source of anxiety as well as a comfort. Food is powerful and having a positive relationship with food is to have power in your life!
So I ask: what does food mean to you?
